    Nancy Fullmer comments (16 January 2018): My grandfather Kenneth Mathews was a student pilot at Hancock Foundation College of Aeronautics in Santa Maria, CA. He flew Waco NC 7970. It was the plane he soloed in. He flew it cross country from Santa Maria to Cloverdale, CA. May 9-10, 1930, refueling in Hollister both ways. I learned all this from the flight log book he kept at the time.

    Involved in an incident.
    Summarized NTSB narrative from report number FTW72DRG03: There were no fatalities. Incident occurred at 18:25 hours. The damage was substantial. Incident occurred at the Stinson Field Airport, San Antonio, TX. This was a local flight from San Antonio, TX. The gear collapsed on touch down. Report remarks include: Left landing gear axle failed.
