LCdr. Milton Johnson, 35, in A-4B BuNo 142922 landed safely Saturday after a midair collision in the middle of the NAS Los Alamitos landing pattern. Joseph Pascal Niens, 42, a disabled student pilot, was killed after the tail of his single engine Ercoupe 415C, N3062H, was sheared off. Niens had taken off from Fullerton shortly before and had requested landing instructions from the tower at Orange Co. Airport. The collision occurred at 12.25 p.m. over Westminster, six miles SE of NAS Alamitos, as two Navy Reserve A4Ds piloted by Johnson and LCdr. L.W. Asquith approached the airfield. Johnson said he did not see the Ercoupe and the only thing he felt was a slight bump. The collision caused slight damage to his wings and flaps, and he was uninjured.
