The pilot, Gary Hubler, perished in the crash. His friend, Cris Ferguson commented on the memory of his friend (24 January 2022): Gary was a good friend of mine. I raced with him many times and he was always a great guy. One year he was out in an unlimited (a Seafury as I remember) by mount Fred north of Reno High up and I was in Midnight Oil #26 down about 1000 AGL plus a Sport class somewhere in the middle all of us on Stead tower keeping separation. A long easy had been out further north and the young lady fling it suddenly had engine trouble and called in a MAYDAY and in the midst of all of this, the tower asked us to keep a lookout and to keep clear of the airport. about 3 min past, and I picked up the Long Easy at my altitude at about 2 miles away. I was able to talk her down onto a road safely. Unknown to me Gary was watching the whole thing. Now after getting back to Stead the News media shows up which I dislike so I bailed but the next morning Gary comes charging up to me (he was a big dude) grabs my arm grabs my hand and said to me that he wanted to shake the hand of a true hero. That was Gary but I asked him to stop calling me that and to keep it quiet. In 2007 we talked a bit he told me to get an IF1 and come back over to their side of the hanger we laughed and moved on with the day I won the heat race and was on the truck when the midair happened. I raced one more year and retired. good memories great people. |
