Ron Henley comments (7 April 2018): I was the crew chief on this airframe from 1988-1991, serving with Alpha Troop, 2/17th Air Cav, 101st Airborne, Ft. Campbell, KY. When I became the crew chief, the aircraft had just crashed with Bravo Troop at JRTC in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and was lowboyed back to Ft. Campbell. I spent 6 months putting her back together, changing out as many parts as possible, from the main mast nut all the way down to the landing skids. The aircraft participated in two tours to NTC in Ft. Irwin, CA, as well as Operation Forward Heavy at Ft. Hunter-Liggett, CA before being deployed on the Merchant Marine vessel the American Eagle to be used in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (Gulf War I). This is a wonderful airframe, beautiful to fly, and a very high flight readiness (98 percent ) almost the whole time I was the crew chief on 066 Awesome Eddie. I named the aircraft after the famous mascot of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. I have many photos and fond memories of this aircraft and glad it still survives out in Arizona. Hope to visit 066 with my wife and 5 kids someday. Roy D. Henley, crew chief, hehenley7@gmail.com 270-804-2642. |
